Summary
A rich
woman, Raffaella, and some friends rent a yacht to sail the Mediterranean
Sea during summer. The sailor, Gennarino, who is a communist, does
not like this woman but has to bear with her bad mood. One day she
wakes up late in the afternoon and asks to be taken to land where
everyone had gone earlier. Gennarino, against his better judgement,
sets up a boat, but during the trip, the boat breaks down. They spend
the night in the middle of the sea and then are stranded on an island
where all hell breaks loose between them.

Review
The
film that started the Wertmüller vogue in the States. Beautiful,
blonde Raffaella of the jet-set loses her yacht while with beautiful,
dark Gennarino of the working class. Their dinghy founders on a sun-soaked
island. A banal political polarisation, fostered by North-South Italian
antagonism, keeps them at each other's throats for a while; but it's
no surprise when proximity resolves itself in a blissful, sado-masochistic
orgy. Raffaella's shrill invective turns to self-abasing adoration;
Gennarino gets his freshly caught fish cooked, and flower arrangements
in his pudenda. Though seemingly a prettily made, pretty erotic exploitation
movie, one suspects that there is value in Wertmüller's observation
of the potency of sexual chauvinism. The film fails, however, through
the absence of credibility and objectivity, and its refusal to move
into the realms of fantasy, allegory, or even irony. Reviewed

This
one is a little difficult to call. Is it rape, or is it sexual psycho-drama?
In this film that caused feminist Gloria Steinhem's hair to catch
on fire when it was released, director Lina Wertmuller gives us a
very cutting edge film with things you just can't see in the movies
anymore. Make your own decision. And, yes, this one is worthy of being
in your DVD collection simply for historic value. Buff Rating: Not
Rated (so we don't totally piss anyone off!)
