| From its opening frames, The English Patient evokes an exhilarating sense of time and place. Told with sweeping economy and the lyricism and tempo that only great art can author, this breathlessly romantic and impassioned epic is a rare reminder of the pleasures made available from consummate filmmaking. The story effortlessly narrates two time periods: pre-war Northern Africa and war-torn WWII Italy. In a superb, brooding portrayal, Fiennes plays a severely burned amnesiac. Tended by a caring nurse (the wonderful, Oscar-winning Binoche) dealing with her own scars, his love affair with a married woman is told through flashback. Scott Thomas revels in the role of the beautiful sophisticate, giving a smart, alluring performance. Adapted from Michael Ondaatje's celebrated novel by director Minghella, The English Patient is keenly observed and replete with the kind of romanticism and intelligent dialogue audiences ache for.
